I read someone's theory that this is actually a manifestation of what little of Vaatu has regenerated or something like that. Which isn't unlikely. Or perhaps it's just a glitch in the Avatar system from Korra being so close to death to the point that maybe she gave up her Raava-spirit?

Take one of the awesomest, most bad[bleep] girls in animation history, and create some sort of enigmatic, negative/inverse form, and it's a good bet you'll have a pretty terrifying character on your hands.
