Science once again does not bode well

Description

No seriously, this a thing: www.newscientist.com/article/d…

Yet further proof that basic sci-fi knowledge should be a requirement for being a scientist.

Now yes, there are some positive applications and possible evolutions in the future that might be worth the research, I guess... but seriously, these kinds of technology really are not a good idea. There's like two dozen ways this could go horribly wrong (or horribly right). Hive-minds have countless possible abuses and disasters, merging animals' minds to make them more intelligent never works out nicely for us humans, the whole fact that this could lead into the technology that allows people to share thoughts (guess how long that'd remain voluntary?), THE BORG, the fact that they mention how they could do away with language (again, guess how long that'd remain voluntary?), the whole synchronizing brains while removing individuality (they didn't mention that individuality part, but seriously, think about, if everyone's brains are completely synchronized, say goodbye to free will and independent thought), and the list goes on.

I get that this is just in early stages in development, but think about all the places it could lead. Who on earth thinks this is a good idea?

Alarmism is a surprisingly fun style to semi-sarcastically write in! I'm really not overly worried about this, I'm counting on good ol' bureaucracy to keep it from advancing. But it is enjoyable to write on.
