Seriously, Reborn! is great, but the romance is probably the weakest part. (I know, I know, Chrome barely counts as a love interest, but she's less annoying/generic than any of the others so far).
We've got (slight spoilers) :
*The generic perfect idol girl who's biggest personality trait is "I like cake" until recently
*The hyperactive stalker (not quite yandere) girl who's more interesting but more annoying
*The cute, sweet, shy girl who's... probably the symbiote of an eldritch reality warping villain who may or may not want to blow up Italy (but she did kiss the main character upon meeting him, so there's that, and she's not annoying, so best girl by default)
My anime-watching buddy and I had almost ran out of series to watch (bar some of the still airing Spring season ones) so we decided to try our first long-running (203 episodes) anime even if we figured we wouldn't have time to complete it, so we started Reborn! (aka Katekyō Hitman Reborn!). With the sole exception of My Hero Academia, this has easily become my favorite classic-style shonen series. It starts out as a goofy gag comedy about anime mafiosi, and manages to switch back and forth between that and some really good drama. Plus, despite the initially low production values, it manages to still get some really exciting and enjoyable fight scenes that make good use of a limited budget. The directing and writing are both pretty strong too, ROMANCE NOT WITHSTANDING. Just read the episode descriptions before hand and skip the filler unless it adds a new character to the mix or looks funny.
It starts out as The Magic School Bus crossed with the Godfather, and moves into more of a classic shonen series with crazy creative characters and continual power escalation. The one big difference being the main character is super lazy and unambitious and just accepts the continual power escalation and his own abilities to protect the friends he's made.
We've only gotten to around episode 60-ish so no spoilers please!
